The nice and admirable fact is that this generation, the post-68 generation, at last has faced up to the past; that there is now a whole network of institutions in the Federal Republic which are facing up to the past; that people say, let us not sweep anything under the carpet, let us tell our children open-mindedly in order to learn that Jews were not only victims but ordinary German citizens, bright or stupid, fat or slim, rich or poor, like all the others.
